Ulysses Simpson Grant
Eighteenth President 1869-1877

Born: April 27, 1822 at Point Pleasant, Ohio. Named Hiram Ulysses Grant.
Education: Graduated from United States Military Academy ; West Point, New York.
Occupation: Soldier, served in Mexican War. Resigned from the Army in 1854, but was unsuccessful in farming or business. Returned to Army in 1861 and was leading Union general in Civil War.
Religion: Methodist.
Family life: Married Julia Dent in 1848; they had three sons and one daughter.
Political career: As a hero of the Civil War, was nominated by the Republicans in 1868. After serving two terms he was defeated for renomination in 1880.
Highlights of his presidency: Chose not to press terms of Fourteenth Amendment. Second administration marred by scandal; his appointees charged with accepting bribes.
Appearance: Short and stocky, with bushy, dark brown beard.
Died: July 23, 1885 at Mount McGregor, New York.
Buried: General Grant National Memorial in New York.
