Party: Republican

Born: July 6th, 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut and grew up in Midland and Houston, Texas. He was born while his father was a student at Yale University. Years later, he, too, became a Yale graduate. He followed his father in other ways. Both turned to the oil business after college -- and both tried unsuccessfully to win a seat in the House of Representatives from a Texas oil town.

Education: Educated at Midland public schools and then Andover Prep School. B.A. in History, Yale University (1968). M.B.A., Harvard Business School (1975).

Occupation: Governor of Texas 1994 to 2001. Worked on his father's presidential campaigns in 1988 and 1992. Managing general partner of the Texas Rangers baseball franchise from 1989 until 1994. Worked in the oil and gas industry from the mid 1970s until 1986.

Military: Texas Air National Guard, F-102 fighter pilot, 1968-73.

Family life: Married Laura Welch, a librarian who grew up in Midland, in 1977. The Bush's have twin daughters - Jenna and Barbara, 16. They have three pets, a dog, Spot, and their two cats, India and Cowboy.

Religion: President Bush is a Methodist and has served on the boards of various charitable, business, and civic organizations.

Professional Experience: Formed his own oil business, Arbusto Corp., in 1977 ('arbusto' is Spanish for 'bush'). He was a deal maker, using other people’s money to drill for oil, after researching and negotiating leases. Bush was considered cautious and did marginally well. Managing general partner of Texas Rangers baseball franchise, 1989-94

Political Experience: Elected President of the United States 2000. Elected Governor in 1994 and re-elected in 1998. Aide to former President Bush (1987-92). Unsuccessful run for Congress in 1978, after which is distanced himself more from his father politically.
