LINE

Born: March 18, Caldwell, New Jersey. Full name was Stephen Grover Cleveland.

Education: Never attended college.

Occupation: Lawyer, public official.

Religion: Presbyterian.

Family life: Married Frances Folsom on June 2, 1886, in the White House. They had three daughters and two sons. Grover Cleveland was the only president to be married in the White House and the first to have a child born in the White House, in 1893. Five years after the death of Grover Cleveland, she married Thomas J. Preston, Jr., a professor of archeology, and remained a figure of note in the Princeton community until she died at age 84.

Political career: Active in local Democratic politics in New York; served as sheriff and district attorney. Elected reform mayor of Buffalo in 1881, governor of New York, 1883-85. Elected president in 1884, but was defeated for second term; reelected in 1892. Grover Cleveland was the only President elected to two nonconsecutive terms.

Highlights of his presidency: Supported tariff reform and the new Civil Service Commission. Inducted Congress to repeal the Tenure Office Act. Regained presidency after Harrison. Had to deal with panic of 1893, bank failures, bankruptcies, and unemployment. Broke Pullman strike to move the mail.

Appearance: He was a large man, 5 feet 11 inches tall weighing over 250 pounds.

Died: June 24, 1908 at their home, "Westland" in Princeton, New Jersey.

Buried: Princeton Cemetery on the college grounds in Princeton, New Jersey.
